There is this quiz show for nerds (like me) at 4.00pm on Channel 7 called It's Academic. It was my first viewing. There are three teams of school in the final this week. In each school team are three kids. There is at least one Indian or one Chinese kid in each of these teams. No surprises there.
I said to Ninjawookie this could be fun. I love trivia and mentioned that I was the area quiz champion for the area back in 1987 when he was only a wee lad learning to crawl.
Anyway, what kind of crappy pieces of trivia are kids required to know about these days? What songs has Beyonce had in the top 10? They flash a photo up some blonde who I swear is the spitting image of Brittany Spears but it turns out to be Kate PepeLaPew(?) who won last year's Australian Idol. That's not trivia! OK. I admit I did poorly on the True/False questions, but for the kids it was only potluck that they had a 50% chance of getting it right. As if these pre-pubescents have even read a Shakespearean play to know the name of a character in Othello!
If you don't like trivia, this show is pure entertainment just watching the faces of the kids either when they answer a question correctly or when they get a question wrong and also watching the other kids' reactions when another team gets the questions correct/wrong. Pure comedy! I'm going for the underdog school (I think it's a public school) but currently the all-boys private school is leading and I hope their arrogant little butts get kicked tomorrow.
Later on, Ninjawookie and I were having an argument about Google Earth and I accused him of misplacing the location mark of where I lived in Hong Kong.
He looked at me and he said, "Are you sure? Didn't you just have a shocker on It's Academic?!"
Yeah, and that's why I love coming home to spend time with my youngest sibling. Just to get abused by his smart-arsed-comments.
Ah, it cracks me up. If you haven't watched TV with a sibling lately do it now!

In Indianapolis we had "Academic Pursuit", and there was always one really loud, trigger happy kid who would chime in and give the worng answer, then make a big, huffy, melodramatic fuss about it. I loved it.
I can't believe you watch this show too!!
When I moved back home two months ago I noticed my dad had begun to watch this very show at 4pm in the arvos. Now bear in mind that my Dad was CEO of NGV (Tezuka exhibition has opened til January!!!!), and yet here he was getting excited because he was smashing some small children's head in at their own gameshow.
maggie: it's even funnier to watch when all the three kids from the school call out the answer in unison and then they congratulate each other with these silly looks as if they've just conquered Mt Everest!
133: HA! I often thought they should have a quiz show where it's the kids against adults (for people like your dad and I) - like in the movie Magnolia.
