Gone again

I looked for you near the library when I got off the ferry. You were not there. Perhaps you were waiting for me at home. I walked up the path hoping for a light in the house. It is dark. I open the door. The house is empty. It is silent. You are gone. I remember where I left you. At the airport express. We said our goodbyes. I could see you disappearing like a faded red dot. You were still waving. I miss you. I've bought tissues.

He murdered people with talk.

I read this this quote in the introduction to 'In Patagonia' by Bruce Chatwin. Nicholas Shakespeare was describing how some people, like the author, Bruce, had the gift of the gab and does not stop talking from the moment he walks into the room. That was how he was able to draw out the most incredible stories from the most ordinary people he came across and include them in his book. But there is talking articulately about a subject matter and then there is opening your mouth just because the speakers likes to hear the sound of their own voice.

Unfortunately for me, I work with a couple of people who just like to talk and talk and talk. In fact, I don't really know why they are in the positions they are in because they would be better off working in a call centre. There is one guy who, from the moment you walk past his desk, you cannot escape talking about absolutely nothing. It's like he is trying to catch up on talk from what he missed out on during sleep. He'll be talking to himself at his desk and when no one gives him any attention he actually gets up and goes around seeking it. I think he has learned now that if he approaches my desk he'll just be ignored. It does appear to be a bit rude but hey try being in the same space with this person for more than eight hours a day and see how you like it. It's particularly frustrating when you have a deadline and trying to concentrate. I've always wondered why cones of silences are not installed in open space offices. I really had to grit my teeth the other day and not have a blow out when a discussion about the happenings in Libya was loud enough to be heard all the way in Tripoli. For fuck's sake lower your voices!

Do people who are constantly talking, without stopping to take a breath, realise that they are having a one way conversation with themselves. They don't stop to think that people have stopped listening. And they wonder why people ignore or try to avoid them. That's because it's always about you you you. You are murdering people with talk!

Would I be a bully if I sat this person aside and said, hey listen we can do less with jibber jabber. It might work for a day. How many ways can you tell someone to shut up? Courtesy of facebook:
1.-Shut up!

91.-I think you should go tell this to your mom, right now, go.

Fashion spot

So I'm going up the escalators at IFC and the two women standing in front of me have turned their heads to the right, which also leads me to turn my head; they appear to be fixated on a woman wearing grey hairy knee-high boots walking on the floor below. I've been wanting to comment on this fashion blunder trend for quite some time now - actually, upon seeing the first pair of mega hairy boots on the streets.

My initial reaction was: How can you look at yourself in the mirror before you leave home and think in your right mind that this is a good look? Freak! If you cannot visualise, this is an example of what a 'trendsetter' looks like:

The Hong Kong version is that these boots are worn with short shorts or hotpants with stockings. I will tell you who started the yeti/wampa look. None other than Mr Karl Largerfeld of Chanel with his Hiver 2010 collection.

I mean, this is all well and good for the Parisian catwalk, Siberia, the Arctic and Inner Mongolia, if you happen to live in an igloo or a yurt, but on the streets of Hong Kong? I don't think so.

The other creature that pops into my head every time I see a woman with these hairy boots on is none other than Narnia's Mr Tumnus from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, except that he can actually carry it off with his red scarf accessory and because he can't help being a faun.

Another thing, if you're short and wearing these boots, I have one word for you: Echuwawa.

Arms crossed

Who on earth thought having someone cross their arms for a photo would make that person look cool? All I can say is that anyone with their arms crossed for a photo makes them look like a super wanker. I went to HKU today and on the pull up banners were five guys in black suits all with their arms crossed. To imitate those King's Glory tutors on the back of buses with big hair and photoshopped blemish-free white complexions no doubt.

The last portrait I took for my publication, the subject, a male, started crossing his arms. I asked - What are you doing? No! Arms down please. Is it instinctive that professionals think they look professional if they cross their arms? There will be no wankers in my publication. I blame the billboards and the ads on the back of buses for brainwashing professionals that this what they are suppose to do when posing for a photo.

Everyone knows crossed arms means being defensive, cautious or cold in body language. Since when did it mean intelligence, being professional and exuding confidence? Shouldn't your hands be on your hips instead?

You see my point?

Pressure

I'm being pressured by family members to rejoin facebook. Today, my cousin, who has not spoken to me for well over 24 months, called me to tell me my other cousin gave birth to a daughter - a month ago! She said she was not able to contact me because I disappeared from facebook.
My cousin, who gave birth, who got my number from my other cousin called me to invite me to the one-month old birthday lunch. Well it was nice to talk to her after all this time.

I now have to reconsider rejoining facebook for fear of not being up-to-date with family news. Poop.

Panda suit

I saw this in the paper and thought it was gold! So much for goretex. This is much better!

The caption reads: A man dressed in a panda costume rides an electric bike on a street of Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province, Dec 16, 2010. The man, surnamed Wen, said he bought the costume for a shopping mall's promotional activity last year. Now he wears the panda uniform to keep out the cold, despite the looks he gets from passers-by. Growing up...

I think I know what I want to be when I grow up. An albatross. They are the perfect gliders and can fly for 20 hours effortlessly.
