Fear

Today I heard one of the most ridiculous and perhaps daftest reason for why a first-time student didn't want to remain in my free talk class. It had nothing to do with my ability to teach of course. In fact, I was praised for my efforts on Saturday afternoon. So, are you ready for the reason? Well, hear this my friends, I apparently do not generate enough fear. Uh-huh. Just in case you think I misspelled that let me repeat it again - I do not generate enough FEAR.

According to this student, the lack of fear coming from the instructor impacts on his ability to learn and speak English. Let me clarify this - because I don't have blonde hair and blue eyes (in short, not a caucasian) - I will never be able to scare this poor bastard enough to allow him to overcome his fear of speaking English to a native English speaker. I know I have certain inadequacies when it comes to teaching, but I think this one takes the cake.

So, I pointed out to the person who relayed this message to me. Firstly, the student attends English classes in order to improve his communication skills and to gain confidence in his speaking abilities. Pray tell, how does one improve communication skills if one is too scared to talk? Secondly, how does one gain confidence if one is shaking like a leaf when speaking? Thirdly, will it help if I wore a 'Scream' mask or spew blood (which is literally what I'm doing now) during lessons?

Believe it or not, this is not the first time that a student has complained of not being scared enough. However, it was the first time involving me but how do people come up with this line illogical logic? Fear + English = Fluency in English? Rather it should be: Student + English + Fear = Moron.

Get some scary boots and a whip!! That way anyone stupid enough to make such retarded complaints could just git a swift whack across the face?

You mean go all S&M? Indeed, I think that would be scary! How's the teaching going?

Aye, very well indeedy. Full staff turnover apart from me tho - one teacher off after a year, another after 14, and Mags suddenly announced plans to move to Kanagawa and pursue photography / surfing / part time teaching! Busy as ever but have this week off for Golden week, tis very nice.

Still love it though, still have groups of little cherubs at my feet most days. Bring it on!

I believe people do fear me especially when I am silent. It really tears them to pieces.

Of course nobody is scared of you. Then only time anyone would have reason to be scared is if they tried to come between you and food or maybe a decent cup of coffee.
