Linguistics

I came across this Press Freedom advertisement of the Napalm girl, which I thought was rather brilliant. I've put it on the Welcome Page of the website that I'm building for the Media Law Project I'm working on. Yep, I started work again on Wednesday.

Tomorrow, I'm going to start writing short biographies of the keynote speakers. I even have to write one about myself under the staff heading. I've been putting it off because I don't know what to write. It'll be a 200 word summary of my CV I guess. I'll have to take a mugshot of myself pretending to work at my desk.

This afternoon I was distracted by a Skype message from Jen of Idaho, USA. She is another Novite who worked with me briefly and live upstairs from me in Shizuoka. We caught up on telling each other what we have been up to for the past 12 months. Jadd- Jen says "Hi!" She's about start a grad course on Library Science. I have no idea what that entails because our conversation was diverted to breadmaking and any talk of food does has priority.

I started watching the second season of Arrested Development. I have to say it's one of the best sit-coms I've watched since Seinfeld ended. Hopefully, dvd sales will resurrect the show if it can be achieved. I was going to wait for my siblings and sibling-in-law to return from their trip to the mainland before I watch it but I couldn't help myself. I'm already on disc number 2.

Just out of curiosity, for those who know how to speak a second language. How much would you charge per word if you had to translate English into that second language ? Personally, my rate would depend on how many seconds it would take to think of the word to convert from Cantonese to English. For example, it takes me one second to think of the word for dog and it takes me 5 seconds to think of the word for exclamation point. At the rate of HK$1 a word, if I literally translate "dog!" that's HK$6 (roughly A$1). I've been getting quotes from translation companies for work and apparently the average rate is $US0.09 per word.
Language should be a currency.

Tell Jen hi for me also. Translating on a one to one basis is for people with a dictionary and a lot of time. Translating for meaning and effect should be paid with huge gold ingots shaped into triumphant trophies.

Will do. I'm going to send her some Azuki Bean Kit-Kats if they can be located and random rice crackers.
