Orbituary

Yee Por/Yoda (1911-2008)

I usually don't wear my heart on my blog but this had to be written. My grand-aunt. I have only one word to describe her. TOPS!

She lived with us before my family migrated to Australia so she looked after my sister, brother and I from when we were still drinking milk from a bottle. She use to re-tell this story about me when I was little over and over and she would never let me forget it even as a grown-up: I use to wake her up in the middle of the night to ask her to take me to the bathroom. Afterwards, I would ask repeatedly, "Do you love me?" Always, she would reply, "Yes, now go back to bed." I must've been really insecure as a child.

She use to take us to the wet markets and tell us what to look out for when buying fish and greens. She was the one we ran to when our parents disciplined us. She made her own clothes including the little butterfly button holes with the loops that hardly anyone knows how to make anymore. She found amusement in the simplest things and anything over $20 was overpriced. She was into beading at one stage and we all had a collection of beaded keyrings. She kept me up to date with what all my cousins were doing. If there had been a competition as to who could have eaten a McDonald's soft cone the fastest, she would've won it.

Her wisdom: You can't eat oranges if you have a cough because it'll make you cough even more. You can't go to bed with wet hair because it'll give you a headache. If you leave rice in your bowl, you'll end up marrying someone with bad skin and if you don't eat fish, you'll end up with growths on your neck. I still believe all of these things are true.

She was my last grand-person. The force was strong with her and now she is gone. She will be deeply missed. *Sniff*
